Cardiovascular Diseases and Stroke

Dr. Herman Taylor directs the largest epidemiological investigation ever undertaken to discover the links between cardiovascular disease and race. The study is based in Mississippi, which has the highest rates of cardiovascular disease in the country. Taylor’s ultimate mission “is to gain the information needed to stop an epidemic of cardiovascular diseases with the African-American community”. From now until 2014, Dr. Taylor and his team will be tracking study participants – observing their lives and how their heart health is related to their environment.

Taylor born in Birmingham, Alabama received his undergraduate degree from Princeton University. He attended Harvard Medical School and served as a Senior Assistant Surgeon in the commissioned corps of U.S. Public Health Care Service following his graduation. Taylor completed training in Internal Medicine at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. After the completion of a cardiology fellowship at the University of Alabama at Birmingham (UAB), he was later appointed to the faculty. Concurrently, he served as the attending cardiologist at the University Hospital, the Birmingham Veterans Medical Center and at Cooper Green Hospital.

His current roles are Director and Principal Investigator for the Jackson Heart Study, Professor of Medicine (University of Mississippi Medical Center), Clinical Professor of Epidemiology and Preventive Medicine (Jackson State University), and Visiting Professor of Biology (Tougaloo College).

Dr. Taylor is the founder of “Heart to Heart”, a non-profit organization that provides cardiac surgical services for children from the developing world.

Dr. Taylor has received numerous awards and honors, including Herbert W. Nickens Award for Excellence in Epidemiological Research; Aaron Shirley Chair for the Study of Health Disparities; Daniel Savage Award for Excellence in Research; Best Doctors in American Award; Blacks in Government Honors for dedicated service “Health Disparities: Research Challenges”; Institutions of Higher Learning Board of Trustees Certificate of Recognition; Excellence in Research Award, Platinum Level; ISHIB Annual Outstanding Research Award; AHA Distinguished Service Award, Alabama Affiliate; Preventive Cardiology Academic Award, NHLBI, NIH; and Fellow American College of Cardiology.
