Herman Taylor, MD

Dr. Herman A. Taylor is the Director and Principal Investigator of the Jackson Heart Study and Professor of Medicine and Attending Physician in the Division of Cardiovascular Diseases and Internal Medicine at the University of Mississippi Medical Center (UMMC), Jackson, MS. He received his undergraduate degree at Princeton University and his medical degree from Harvard Medical School; he also earned a Masters of Public Health degree from Harvard School of Public Heath.

Before completing his residency in internal medicine, he served 3 years in the Commissioned Corps of the Public Health Service in Miami, Florida. After completing training in Internal Medicine at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill and a cardiology fellowship at the University of Alabama at Birmingham (UAB), he was appointed to the UAB faculty and served as Attending Cardiologist at the University Hospital, the Birmingham Veterans Medical Center, and the Cooper Green Hospital. He is a Fellow in the American College of Cardiology and in the American Heart Association. Dr. Taylor holds the Aaron Shirley Endowed Chair for the Study of Health Disparities at UMMC.

Dr. Taylor is the recipient of numerous awards, including the Minority Access Role Model Award and the Herbert W. Nickens Award for Excellence in Epidemiological Research in 2004. Dr. Taylor holds the following titles: Director of the Jackson Heart Study, Professor of Medicine and attending physician in Division of Cardiovascular Diseases and Internal Medicine, UMMC, Jackson, MS; Visiting Professor of Biology in the Division of Natural Sciences at Tougaloo College, Tougaloo, MS; clinical Professor of Epidemiology and Preventive Medicine at Jackson State University, know more
