Georgia Dunston, Ph.D
Dr. Georgia M. Dunston is a professor in the College of Medicine at Howard University. Dr. Dunston, who has been with the University since 1972, is also the former Chair of the Department of Microbiology. She is an elected member of the Academy of Medicine of Washington, District of Columbia. She received her undergraduate degree in Biology at Norfolk State University in 1965. After receiving a Master’s degree in Biology at Tuskegee University in 1967, she completed requirements for a doctoral degree in Human Genetics at the University of Michigan in 1972.
Dr. Dunston pursued postdoctoral work in Tumor Immunology in 1975. She serves as the Founding Director and Director of Molecular Genetics, National Human Genome Center (NHGC) at Howard University. She has served on the National Advisory Council for the National Institute of Environmental Health Sciences; the Genetic Basis of Disease Review Committee for the National Institute of General Medical Sciences; the National Academy of Sciences Review Committee on the Human Genome Diversity Project; Diplomate, American Board of Histocompatibility and Immunogenetics, and the Delaware Biomedical Research Institute Network External Advisory Board.
Among her honors are the Genome Pioneer in People of the Year Impact Award by AARP the magazine, and the New Millennium Foundation Excellence in Technology Award. Dr. Dunston and her work have been featured in Discover Magazine’s article on Genes, Race, and Medicine, Human, Study Thyself; and in the “Genetic Revolution” section of the Maryland Science Center Exhibition on know more
