About BFS Program

Members of under served groups face a significantly increased risk of dying prematurely, developing major chronic diseases and experiencing poor health care compared to other races and/or ethnic groups. Teams of researchers with biomedical and clinical backgrounds are needed to focus their intellectual talents on solving these health disparities. The BioMedical Faces of Sciences (BFS) Program will motivate middle and high school students to pursue careers in fields which can lead to a better understanding of these diseases and ultimately their cure. The BFS role model scientists will open up exciting fields, like Cardiology, Cell Biology, Genomics, Immunology, Nephrology and infectious diseases like HIV/AIDS. BFS role model scientists, along with other scientists, physicians and other researchers a part of the BFS database main mission is to encourage and motivate students to seek career paths which lead to PhDs, MDs, and MD PhDs in biomedical and clinical sciences. Ultimately, students experiencing the BFS program will learn how they can become "health messengers" to improve health outcomes and ultimately, eliminate health disparities in their communities.

Preface

You will find the BFS Program an important asset in your learning and instructional environment. The BFS scientist role models bring their excitement about science and experiences becoming scientists into your classrooms, science centers, libraries, and other places where young persons are motivated to condiere pursuing careers in science, engineering, or mathematics. These positive BFS role model scientists are influential to all students.

As school systems all over our nation are addressing reform, the BFS program offers a new and exciting approach in bringing out the best in our students and teachers working together to make our schools centers of excellence. We are confident the program plays an important role in ensuring that schools produce tomorrow's scientists, engineers, and mathematicians in numbers that will keep our nation globally competitive. It is equally important to us that the young children who represent our nations's future believe in themselves, respond and value their culture and other cultures, and have the confidence to be whatever they want to be.
